This Easter, our T Level Animal Management students took part in an unforgettable two-week field expedition to the Peloponnese coast of Greece, organised by Captive & Field Herpetology.
Captive & Field Herpetology runs international expeditions each year to support snakebite awareness, conservation, and ecological research. Led by experienced field experts, students explored a variety of habitats鈥攆rom mountainous forests to coastal wetlands鈥攊n search of native wildlife. Their efforts were rewarded with remarkable sightings, including loggerhead turtles, nose-horned vipers, leopard snakes, African chameleons, golden jackals, wild boar, flamingos, and fire salamanders.
Over the past few years, our Common Leys Farm Campus has built a strong partnership with the team at Captive & Field Herpetology, providing students with unique opportunities to gain industry insight and experience through international travel.
Ben, who led the expedition explains:
鈥Our Easter Expedition to the Peloponnese region of Greece offers participants an experience-driven insight into the world of fieldwork, whilst allowing hands-on experience with a number of field techniques... We run this expedition in hope of igniting a passion for fieldwork and to offer the chance for participants to gain the necessary skills to progress into other experiences and careers in the biological sciences.
The trip provided students with the chance to develop valuable practical skills in field biology, such as species identification, safe handling techniques, and biological sampling. Their wildlife observations were also logged on iNaturalist, contributing to global biodiversity research.
In addition to the fieldwork, students enjoyed a cultural visit to Athens, where they explored the historic capital and gained a deeper appreciation of Greek history and culture.
This experience not only supports students' academic development but also helps inspire future careers in conservation, animal science, and research.
