Learn to design and lay out garden borders in this indoor, theory-based workshop. Explore plant selection, edging options, and key planning steps. Bring paper and pencil to sketch ideas and create a plant list.
鈥 Key considerations before creating a new border or bed鈥 Understanding soil, light, and drainage requirements鈥 Basic design principles: shape, structure, and layering鈥 Plant selection: perennials, shrubs, and seasonal interest鈥 Edging options: practical and aesthetic choices鈥 Common mistakes and how to avoid them鈥 Sketching a basic border plan and developing a plant list鈥 Q&A and practical tips for getting started at home

Please bring paper and a pencil to the workshop to sketch out design ideas and start creating a suggested plant list for your garden border. If you have an existing border in mind, then the bring a diagram of it with sizes of key lengths marked.

Facilities at Abingdon Campus:

- Vending machines and Costa Coffee shop (open until 7pm on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday term time only).- Watercoolers available, making it easy to refill your water bottle.- Free parking.

Please note that this is not an RHS qualification course, nor is it affiliated with any of the horticulture programmes delivered at our Common Leys campus. The course is specifically designed for gardening enthusiasts seeking to develop their knowledge and practical skills for personal interest, rather than as a formal professional qualification.

Entry criteria
No previous knowledge or experience necessary. All welcome.

Please note - you should be 19 years old or over at 31st August 2026 prior to starting the course.

Fee information
As part of your course we may organise trips to assist you with your learning. Trips are optional, and you will not be penalised if you choose not to participate.
