This course is aimed at students working at or towards Entry Level 1 in English and maths and that are becoming more independent. Students work towards an OCN accreditation in Skills for Independence and Employability, alongside continuing to develop their independent living skills.
On this course students have the opportunity to take part in various enrichment activities such as visiting the local sports centre, community visits and taking part in fundraising activities. The students arrange a games club, which takes place at College, for their peers to take part in. Students will also access Common Leys Farm, once a week, where they take part in either Arts & Crafts or Horticulture, as part of a social enterprise, work experience project. The products they make and grow are then sold to the public and fund future projects.

This course is 2 years long, Year 1 is 5 days a week and Year 2 is 4 days a week. 9.00am 鈥 3.30pm, every day, apart from Wednesdays, when the students finish at 2.30pm.

Transition opportunities following the completion of this course include progression to either Understanding Work Skills or Living Independently. This would be discussed at EHCP Annual Review meetings to determine the most appropriate progression route.

- Personal care and hygiene

- Working with others

- Developing personal confidence

Year 2 Example Units:

- Using public transport

- Making a simple meal

- Drugs and alcohol awareness

- Managing Money

- Developing emotional resilience

Across both years students will also have the opportunity to access enrichment, sports, social action projects, enterprise activities, cooking, travel training, and where appropriate maths and English qualifications.

What next?
At an appropriate time depending on progress made against EHCP outcomes, students could transition on another course focused on developing employability skills or Independently Living/Life Skills or adult social care.
Entry criteria
No formal entry requirements however all students are required to have an Education Health & Care Plan that is supported by their Local Authority, and places on any course are subject to the LA agreeing to fund placement.
Fee information
As part of your course we may organise trips to assist you with your learning. Trips are optional, and you will not be penalised if you choose not to participate.
