An introductory course that teaches coding basics through simple, hands on projects. Perfect for beginners to build confidence and core programming skills.
This is a course for the curious. This introductory course is designed for anyone curious about how coding works and eager to develop practical digital skills from the ground up. No previous experience is required. You鈥檒l learn the core principles that underpin all programming languages, including variables, data types, logic, problem solving, and how to structure simple programs.

Using beginner friendly tools and real examples, you鈥檒l explore the fundamentals of coding in languages such as Python, gaining confidence through hands-on exercises and step by step guidance. Along the way, you鈥檒l discover how code is used to automate tasks, build applications, and solve everyday challenges.

The aims of the course are:鈥 Introduce learners to the fundamentals of programming. 鈥 Build confidence in writing and understanding basic code. 鈥 Develop problem solving and logical thinking skills. 鈥 Prepare learners for further study in software development.

The course covers the following:

鈥 What is programming? 鈥 Setting up the coding environment 鈥 Variables and data types 鈥 Inputs, outputs, and operators 鈥 Conditional statements 鈥 Loops and repetition 鈥 Functions 鈥 Basic error handling 鈥 Mini projects to consolidate learning

The college uses windows-based systems not apple-based systems. This does not preclude you from using your apple product however please be aware that there can be slight differences in how you approach certain applications that are primarily written by Microsoft for windows.

Please note there are no classes during half term.

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Please note - you should be 19 years old or over at 31st August 2026 prior to starting the course.

Fee information
A textbook is used to accompany the course, but it is optional to buy this (average cost 拢20 - 拢25). The textbook will support your learning for at least 1 year. Your tutor will be able to advise you at the first session.

As part of your course we may organise trips to assist you with your learning. Trips are optional, and you will not be penalised if you choose not to participate.
